What to expect at the riverfront park

Haverstraw Beach State Park is a shoreline section of the larger Rockland Lake State Park complex, with the Hudson River as its central feature. The Hook Mountain/Nyack Beach Bikeway and Hudson River Greenway pass through the park, so you can include it as part of a longer route as well as a brief riverfront stop.

The shoreline also has a place in Revolutionary War history. British Major John Andre met General Benedict Arnold here on September 22, 1780. Andre had paddled from the British warship Vulture to the shore under cover of night; he was hanged as a spy at Tappan on October 2, 1780.

Shoreline and outdoor activities

Shoreline and outdoor activities

The park’s defining outdoor feature is its Hudson River shoreline, while the bikeway and Greenway provide routes through the park. You can take in the riverfront and then continue along one of these paths; the park’s connections also make it possible to fold the shoreline into a longer walk or ride.

The shoreline has seen other uses over time. In 1845, as Haverstraw’s brick industry grew, the Snedeker family built a shipyard at the “V” shape. Brickyard barges were repaired there, and day-line boats stopped at the site. A fire burned the family’s dock in 1854, after which it was abandoned.

The High Tor State Park trails and views add another outdoor option around Stony Point.
